Vice Chairman Michael Burgess

Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D. is Vice Chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee which serves as a formal council to formulate and implement national legislative priorities, and to improve relationships between the executive and legislative branches of government.

Always dedicated to improving America’s health care system, Dr. Michael Burgess decided to run for the vacated U.S. Congressional seat of Texas’ 26th District in 2002. Alongside modernizing our health care, Dr. Burgess also believes in building a strong defense, protecting our Homeland, cutting wasteful government spending, reforming the tax code into a simpler, fairer system, and making America energy self-sufficient.

First elected in 2002, Congressman Burgess served on the House Transportation and Infrastructure, Government Reform and Science Committees during his first term.

Re-elected in 2004 and 2006, Congressman Michael Burgess serves as a member of the prestigious House Energy and Commerce Committee. One of only three exclusive committees in the House of Representatives, the committee’s jurisdiction is arguably the broadest (non-tax-oriented) jurisdiction of any Congressional committee. Congressman Burgess sits on four subcommittees: Health, Energy, Oversight and Investigations, and Commerce, Trade and Consumer Protection.

The Energy and Commerce Committee maintains principal responsibility for legislative oversight relating to public health, air quality and environmental health, the supply and delivery of energy, telecommunications, consumer protection, food and drug safety, and interstate and foreign commerce in general. This jurisdiction extends over five Cabinet-level departments and seven independent agencies--from the Energy Department, Health and Human Services, the Transportation Department to the Federal Trade Commission, Food and Drug Administration, and Federal Communications Commission.
