National Mediation Board: FY08 funding - $13 Million

The Railway Labor Act (RLA) applies only to labor relations issues in the airline and railroad industries. The National Mediation Board (NMB) administers only certain aspects of the RLA regarding representation, mediation and arbitration. In short, the mission of the NMB is to minimize work stoppages by facilitating harmonious labor relations only for airlines and railroads industries.

 

Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service: FY08 Funding - $43 Million

The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service is an independent agency whose mission is to preserve and promote labor-management peace and cooperation, except in the railroad and airline industries. Headquartered in Washington, DC, with two regional offices and more than 70 field offices, the agency provides mediation and conflict resolution services to industry, government agencies and communities.

 

National Labor Relations Board: FY08 Funding - $252 Million

The National Labor Relations Board is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1935 to administer the National Labor Relations Act, the primary law governing relations between unions and employers in the private sector. The statute guarantees the right of employees to organize and to bargain collectively with their employers, and to engage in other protected concerted activity with or without a union, or to refrain from all such activity.

Dept. of Education- Safe and Drug Free Schools
FY08 Funding: $48 million

Safe and Drug Free Schools was enacted to address concerns about increased school violence and drug abuse among school aged youth.

 

Department of Justice: Secure our Schools
FY08 Funding: $15 million

$384 million for Juvenile Justice programs, including $15 million for the Secure Our Schools Act to ensure school safety and crime deterrence. Secure our Schools funds school safety equipment and/or programs intended to improve school safety. SOS grants assist in the purchase of such security measures as the placement and use of metal detectors, locks, lighting, and other deterrent measures; security assessment; security training for students and personnel; and coordination with local law enforcement agencies. In fiscal year 2004, SOS distributed nearly $10 million to help schools in 220 high-risk jurisdictions with increasing security concerns.

 

Department of Health and Human Services, SAMSHA-School Based Violence Prevention: $ 37,454,964

The SS/HS Initiative is a discretionary grant program that provides students, schools, and communities with federal funding to implement an enhanced, coordinated, comprehensive plan of activities, programs, and services that focus on promoting healthy childhood development and preventing violence and alcohol and other drug abuse.
